Therapy for Neurodivergent Women Navigating Motherhood

CHARLESTON SC + VIRTUAL THERAPY ACROSS SOUTH CAROLINA

You used to be the person who could handle everything. Then pregnancy, postpartum changes, or motherhood disrupted the routines, recovery time, and sense of control that helped you function.

If you feel overwhelmed, overstimulated, or unlike yourself—and ADHD or autism may be part of the picture—there is a reason this became harder.

Summer Sol Counseling offers warm, practical, neurodivergence-affirming therapy for women and mothers in Charleston and virtually across South Carolina.

Motherhood Changed the Conditions Your Brain Relied On

Before motherhood, you may have built routines, systems, and coping strategies that helped you manage a demanding life. You knew when you could rest, exercise, focus, recover, or step away.

Pregnancy, postpartum life, and parenting can change those conditions almost overnight. Sleep becomes unpredictable. Tasks are constantly interrupted. Quiet and recovery time become harder to find. The strategies that once helped may no longer be enough.

You may be experiencing:

  • A constant mental load and too many unfinished tasks

  • Sensory overload from noise, touch, clutter, crying, or competing demands

  • Postpartum anger, anxiety, or intrusive thoughts

  • Difficulty focusing, transitioning between tasks, or maintaining routines

  • Burnout, emotional exhaustion, or a loss of identity

  • Relief, grief, or uncertainty after recognizing ADHD or autism in yourself

Struggling does not mean you are failing. It may mean that your needs, environment, and nervous system deserve a different kind of support.

You Do Not Need
A Diagnosis to Begin

You may already have an ADHD or autism diagnosis. You may have been diagnosed recently and be reexamining your life through a new lens. Or you may only be beginning to wonder whether neurodivergence helps explain why certain parts of life have always felt harder than they seem to feel for other people.

You do not need a formal diagnosis to explore these experiences in therapy. Summer welcomes women who are diagnosed, recently diagnosed, self-identified, or questioning whether ADHD or autism may be part of their story.

Therapy is not a substitute for a formal diagnostic assessment, but it can provide a supportive place to understand your patterns, sensory needs, emotions, relationships, and daily challenges with greater clarity and less shame.

From “Something Is Wrong With Me” to
Understanding What You Need

You may be feeling:

  • Overwhelmed by ordinary demands

  • Ashamed that you cannot keep up

  • Disconnected from your identity

  • Unsure why your reactions feel so intense

  • Exhausted from masking or pushing through

  • Frustrated by strategies that do not fit your life

When life feels unmanageable, it is easy to assume that you should simply be trying harder. Therapy offers another possibility: understanding what is happening beneath the overwhelm.

In Therapy, We Work Toward:

  • Understanding your patterns with less shame

  • Recognizing sensory and nervous-system needs

  • Communicating boundaries more clearly

  • Building realistic routines and support systems

  • Strengthening self-trust and self-compassion

  • Reconnecting with who you are beyond your responsibilities

The goal is not to “fix” your brain or turn you into someone else. It is to help you understand yourself and create a life that feels more sustainable, supported, and aligned with your needs.

Therapy That Is Warm, Practical, and Neurodivergence-Affirming

Summer’s approach is relational, trauma-informed, and grounded in the belief that meaningful change begins with feeling safe, respected, and understood. Sessions move at a collaborative pace and make room for both deeper emotional exploration and practical support.

Your work may include noticing nervous-system patterns, developing greater somatic or mind-body awareness, exploring attachment and relationship experiences, clarifying your values, and practicing self-compassion. Summer also incorporates evidence-informed strategies for boundaries, communication, sensory needs, routines, emotional regulation, and the everyday mental load of motherhood.

Summer is also trained in EMDR, which may be incorporated into trauma-focused therapy when it is clinically appropriate and aligned with the client’s needs, readiness, and goals.

This is not therapy that asks you to perform, hide neurodivergent traits, or force yourself into systems that have never fit. It is personalized support designed to help you understand your experiences, strengthen self-trust, and develop strategies that work in your actual life.

Summer Zell, therapist for neurodivergent women and mothers in Charleston, South Carolina

Hi, I’m Summer. I’m a Charleston-based therapist who supports women through pregnancy, postpartum life, motherhood, late-recognized or suspected ADHD and autism, burnout, parenting stress, trauma, major life transitions, and the transition from college to career.

As a mom of three and stepmom to two, I understand that motherhood can hold deep love and meaning while also bringing exhaustion, sensory overload, grief, and major changes in identity. My experience is not the same as every client’s, but it helps me approach this work with compassion, honesty, and respect for the complexity of family life.

My style is warm, collaborative, and practical. You do not need to mask, perform, or arrive with everything figured out.
